Water Safety Tips That Will Keep Your Family Happily Afloat…

You can greatly reduce the chances of you and your children becoming a drowning victim or being injured if you follow a few simple saeftey tips:

  • Make sure an adult is constantly watching young children swimming, playing, or bathing in water.
  • Never swim alone or in unsupervised places.
  • Teach your children to always swim with a buddy.
  • Keep small children away from buckets containing liquid; Five-gallon industrial containers are a particular danger. An infant or toddler can drown in as little as one inch of water.

“Do You Really Know If You Have The Right Amount Of Auto Insurance Coverage?”

We love to hear from all of our good friends and clients who enjoy reading our monthly newsletter. If you have a question about anything related to your auto insurance policy, please feel free to call or stop by. It’s a good idea to have the “right” coverage.

Our Independence Day, July 4th

Here are some words to ponder on this year’s Independence Day:

“I believe in the United States Of America as a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, whose just powers are drived from the consent of the government; a democracy in a Republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.”

“I therefore believe it is my duty to my Country to love it; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.”

That’s “The American’s Creed,” written in 1917 by William Tyler Page, an employee of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., as an entry in a writing contest shortly after the United States entered World War I.

The judges selected Page’s entry out of thousands because, in just 100 words, he gave “the best summary of the political faith of America.”
Page incorporated passages and phrases from the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Congress officially adopted the Creed on April 13, 1918.

Here’s To Your HEALTH!!!

              OVERWEIGHT?

Milk May Do Your Body Good!

Good news for milk drinkers: Dairy products can lower the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

A 10 year study found that among overweight people ages 18 to 30, those who consumed the most dairy products had a 72% lower incidence of insulin resistance syndrome than those who consumed the least.

The syndrome is a forerunner of diabetes and it increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

But dairy products don’t have similar benefits for these who aren’t overweight, according to the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

SPOON UP A BOWL OF OATS TO LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE!

A serving of whole grain oats cereal every day lowers blood pressure, two new studies reveal. And for patients who are taking medication for high blood pressure, the oat cereal may allow them to decrease their dosages.

EAT ONLY SOY MUCH TO CUT RISK OF BREAST CANCER!

Eating too much soy can be dangerous. Soy contains substances called isoflavones, which in excessive amounts may increase the risk of breast cancer and interfere with thyroid function.

But moderate soy consumption – a half of tofu or a cup of soy milk daily, for instance can lower cholesterol and breast cancer risk.

How To Shape Up At Home…

Without Spending A Cent!

Forget about fancy gyms and expensive machines. You can get into great shape at home in just 15 minutes a day, and it won’t cost you a penny!

“All those expensive trimmings are a waste of time and money and can actually keep you from getting in shape,” well-known training expert and coach Doug Brolus says, “they make exercise into such a big production that it can be discouraging.”

“All you really need is a pillow, a small rug and two light barbells or standard sized soup cans – and with these you can get into great shape no matter how old you are.”

Brolus, who is based in Detroit, recommends a system called “Circuit Training,” which involves doing sets of different exercise in rapid succession without resting in between them. The system works out every area of the body including the cardiovascular system, and can be tailor to each individual’s fitness level.

“Check with your doctor before starting if you haven’t been exercising regularly,” advises Brolus, who has worked with top fitness experts including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jack La Lanne. “Start slow and allow yourself as much rest as you need between sets. Then as you progress and build endurance you can add speed to the repetitions, stop resting between sets, and add more weight if you choose.”

There are 5 different exercises to include in the Brolus routine. Repeat each one 10 times, then move on to 10 repetitions of the next without resting. After completing all five exercises, rest for one minute, then go through all five again. Do this until you have gone through all five exercises four different times. The total times should be about 15 minutes.

SQUATS: Standing with your legs comfortably spread at shoulder width, toes pointed forward, gradually lower yourself into a sitting position,

hold for one second, then stand up. Repeat.

If You Plan On Going To Any
Summer Parties…Here’s Some Important Tips To Help You AVOID A Drunk Driving Conviction…!

Whether you are going to a summer party, out to dinner, a wedding reception, bachelor party, or simply going out with some friends, most people know in advanced whether they will be consuming alcohol on a particular night.

So, remember…even if drinking is on the agenda, driving after consuming alcohol does not have to be part of the plan!

Some say that the best way to avoid a DUI conviction is never to drive a car after drinking. Great advice, for sure. Here are a few tips for avoiding a drunk driving conviction:

  • Discuss Your Agenda with Others In Your Group. If you don’t plan ahead, you could expose yourself to a possible drunk driving charge. Someone needs to be the designated driver. It’s just pure and simple!
  • If You Know You’re Unable To Drive Safely Call A Cab. Some communities have developed a program offering FREE cab rides to you if you have been drinking or have had too much to drink.
  • Thanks, But I’m Going To Drive After Drinking Anyway”: Certain people do not choose to seek alternate means of transportation on their “nights out.” For people who drink and drive, even in moderation, a good bit of advice is in order.

IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW are arrested for a DUI call our office at (619)476-9436. Ask for Attorney Sara Imsdahl.

Water Safety Tips That Will Keep Your Family Happily Afloat

To prevent choking:

Never chew gum or eat while swimming, diving or playing in water.

Learn to swim.

Enroll yourself and your children aged 4 and older in swimming classes. Swimming classes are not recommended for children under age 4.

Learn CPR.

This applies particularly to pool owners and water sports enthusiasts.

Do not use air-filled swimming aids, such as “water wings”.

Always use life jackets, “water wings” are just aids to help children who can already swim.

Check the water depth before entering.

9 feet is the recommended minimum depth for diving or jumping.

When Buying Homeowner’s Insurance, Be Aware…

Ginger Applegarth, author of “Wake Up and Smell the Money,” recommends that homeowners base their insurance needs on “guaranteed replacement-cost” figures.

As opposed to current market values to ensure that insurers rebuild no matter what the cost. She also offers these simple tips:

  1. Take photographs or make a video of each room in the house and put a list of your valuables, such as jewelry, antiques, and electronic equipment, in a fireproof box on in as safety deposit box at the bank.
  2. Examine the limits for reimbursement of theft or loss. Many policies pay only $1,000 for items like jewelry, cameras, VCR, etc.
If that’s not enough, opt to list valuables individually, paying an extra premium, to ensure that you’ll be reimbursed for each.

Are You Buying The Right Luggage?

Consumer experts recommend buying your luggage based on your most regular mode of transportation.

Air travel: Opt for hard-sided luggage with wheels. That hard exterior will survive the baggage handling machines, and the wheels allow you to move through the airport without porters or carts.

Train travel: Buy soft-sided luggage with large handles so you can easily lift it onto the overhead rack.

Car trips: Choose duffel bags for flexible arranging in the trunk and or suit bags that can be hung on the side hooks.

Go On Vacation Without Gaining Any Weight

A nation health club, Curves for Women, offers these tips on how to enjoy your vacation without gaining any weight:

Keep on the move and incorporate physical activities into your trip.
Eat every four or five hours to keep your blood on an even keel and hunger pains at bay.

If You’re Going Away On Vacation This Summer And Need To Go On Plane

Make Sure You Read This…!

The continuing war on terrorism as well as recent airline crashes have made many travelers more than a little queasy about flying.

Yet from time to time we are required to take a plane to get to our destination. How do you cope with the fear of flying? Try these tactics:

  • Take a look at the facts. Flying remains one of the safe modes of transportation, above and beyond driving.
  • Weigh the risk and benefits. There may be a very small chance of something going wrong, but there’s huge opportunity for professional and personal growth and progress if you fly to your destination.

Shape Up At Home…Continued!

BICEP CURLS: With or without weights. Stand, holding hands at your sides, palms facing forward, then raise forearms and bend elbows until hands almost touch shoulders. Repeat.

SIDE LATERAL RAISES: With or without weights. Stand, hands at side, palms facing forward. Slowly move arms away from your sides, keeping your elbows straight, until your hands are at shoulder level, then lower. Repeat.

LEG LIFTS: Lie on your back with your hands behind your head, legs extended. Gradually raise both legs extended. Gradually raise both legs until your heels are about 5 inches off the ground, hold for a second then lower. Repeat.

ABDOMINAL CRUNCHES: Lie on your back with your legs resting on a pillow, hands behind your head. Do a half sit-up until your shoulders are about 5 inches over the ground, then lower. Repeat.

“Do this routine four to five times a week and you’ll find that within a few weeks it will become easier and easier,” said Brolus.

Don’t Waste Your Money On Diet Drugs!

If you’re thinking of using diet pills to help you lose weight, save your money, experts say – because recent research shows that prescription drugs for weight loss are not very effective.

“Diet drugs produce only modest losses in weight and this applies to all such drugs, old and new,” said Dr. C. Keith Haddock, a psychologist at the University of Missouri Kansas City, who headed the study of the drugs’ impact. There was no drug, or class of drugs, that demonstrated clear superiority. And with some weight-loss drugs, their effectiveness diminishes with continued use.”

Dr. Haddock and his colleagues analyzed 108 studies of diet drugs done between 1960 and 1999 and published the results in the February issue of the International Journal of Obesity. They found that drugs used alone resulted in a weight loss of only 4.5 to 9 pounds per individual, with most of the loss occurring in the first 6 months a drug was used.

Combinations of diet drugs such as amphetamine and fenfluramine resulted in greater weight loss – up to 21.1 pounds but many combinations are hazardous, and have been removed from the market, the expert said.

Avoid Getting Caught, Cut Or Struck

Many on-the-job injuries are the result of being caught, cut or struck by an object or piece of machinery, And whether the injury is slight or serious, it can cost you…in time – from bandaging a cut to recovering from surgery; money – from medical bills to lost wages; or health – from a temporary bruise to a permanent disability. To protect yourself from these injures, follow recommended procedures, use common sense, and stay alert. Although every job has its own hazards, there are some general safety precautions you should remember. For every job, think about and pay attention to what you’re doing. Ask yourself these questions:

· Have you been trained to do the task correctly and safely?
· Are you following proper procedures for equipment operation and maintenance?
· Is the tool or equipment in safe operating condition?
· Is the equipment guarded, locked or tagged?
· Should you be wearing personal protective equipment?
· Is there something around you that could affect the safety of the task?
· How can you protect your-self or eliminate those possible hazards?

To protect your self when using tools or equipment, make sure it’s in safe operating condition and that its guard or shield is in place. If a tool or machinery is defective mark it as such and take it out of service. Never bypass a safety feature of take a “short cut,” even for a “quick job.” Keep your hands and fingers clear of sharp or rotating parts. Avoid loose clothing or jewelry when working; surface edges, machinery or moving parts can catch them. Handle sharp or pointed tools with extreme care. Never use your fingers to clean sharp tools, blades or saws. Turn off equipment and use only approved recommended devices for unjamming equipment or retrieving objects stuck in machinery. Make sure you return all tools and equipment to their proper storage areas. Stay clear of loads being moved by mechanical equipment. When lifted or lowering loads, watch your hands and fingers that they don’t get caught or crushed. Before lifting an object, check it for protrusions, nails, splinters, screws, metal banding or other sharp or pointed items, which can cause cut or puncture injuries. Pay attention to what you’re doing and what others are doing around you. Take responsibility for your safety so you don’t become a victim of a caught, cut or struck injury.

It’s Summer & Time To Plant Those Flowers

Gardening experts say that perennials, flowers that bloom year after year, are ideal for gardeners who want low-maintenance flowerbeds and a long season of colors and blooms. Purchase plants that will thrive in your area by asking gardening centers if a particular perennial is within your “hardiness zone.”

Conduct a soil test, using a home kit or calling on a landscaper. In the fall, examine the plants to determine if it’s necessary to divide crowded clumps of plants. Popular perennials include:

*Asters *Dahlias
*Mums *Candy Turf
*Delphiniums *Peonies
*Carnations *Lilies

Why “Road Rage” Is Such A Safety
Hazard To Your Family…

“Road rage” is a term that gets thrown around quite a bit these days. We hear on the evening news about motorists who are physically assaulted by other drivers, people who get so angry on the road that they just lose control of themselves.

But what we don’t hear about on the news, most likely because it isn’t as sensational as road rage weaker cousin, known as aggressive driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), aggressive driving is “the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that endangers or is likely to endanger persons or property.”

So, if you see someone on the road driving aggressive or unsafe simply take down there license plate or call 911 from your cell phone.
