Workers' compensation claim might follow window washer's death

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health and the San Diego Police have launched investigations into the death of a window washer. A workers' compensation claim for death benefits will likely follow this tragedy. According to authorities, the incident occurred on a recent Tuesday morning at a condominium complex in downtown San Diego.

Paramedics rushed to the scene after a witness called 911. Reportedly, the 61-year-old man's daughter said he had been a window washer for more than 40 years. The reason for the fall is yet to be determined by investigators, but it is believed that he fell at least five stories from where he was cleaning the condominium windows.

Paramedics say they attempted to save his life by initiating cardiac life support. He was then rushed to the hospital where even advanced lifesaving efforts failed. He ultimately succumbed to numerous blunt force injuries. Cal/OSHA investigators will determine whether the employer of the deceased window washer complied with safety regulations. The agency revealed that the owner of the business had 10 previous safety violations on record.

Losing a loved one under such circumstances is naturally traumatic for surviving family members. Fortunately, the unanticipated financial burden of lost income and end-of-life expenses can be eased by the California workers' compensation insurance program. Further assistance can be obtained from an attorney who is experienced in assisting grieving families with the complicated process to claim death benefits and to assess whether additional legal recourse may be available. A lawyer can also help to secure a workers' comp wage-replacement package that will help with the family's day-to-day living expenses in the aftermath of the tragedy.
